1 Year of Being Fully Self-Employed!

2024 has come and gone, and what a year it’s been!

I’ve spent the last 12 months navigating the world of freelancing, and let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. There’s been plenty of highs (and some not-so-highs), but the best part? The lessons I’ve learned along the way.

I’ve realised that self-employment isn’t just about the work; it’s about constantly growing, adapting, and embracing the mess that comes with it. Whether it’s celebrating small wins, learning from mistakes, or just rolling with the punches, I’ve picked up a few key takeaways that I think you’ll find relatable, especially if you’re on a similar journey.

Here’s a couple things I’ve learned, that might help your freelancing journey…

Always diversify

Recently it hit me that if someone were to hack my Instagram overnight, my whole business would be gone. Sounds dramatic, but honestly, it’s the only place I’ve been marketing myself for months! Lesson learned: protect your business by diversifying where you show up, and make sure you’re out there in the world talking about your work. Networking is key!

There will be wins and losses
Freelancing is full of ups and downs, and I’ve learned to celebrate the small wins, whether it’s landing a new client or finishing a project I’m proud of. These victories keep me motivated. But failure is part of the journey too; every misstep is a chance to learn and improve. Embracing both the wins and setbacks has been key. Celebrate progress, learn from mistakes, and keep moving forward!

Embrace the mess
Things rarely go as planned, and that’s perfectly fine. There will be days when projects get delayed and clients change their minds last minute. Rather than stressing about it, I’ve learned to roll with it. Freelancing is messy, but it’s that unpredictability that makes it exciting and keeps me learning and growing. Just keep your head up, and things will fall into place.

And while we’re at it, I’d love to hear what you have learned during your time freelancing. Hit reply and let me know what’s been your biggest lesson. I’m always up for a good chat, and maybe we can learn from each other.

Catch you soon design weirdos,
